Hamupipőke meséjének eredete az ókori Egyiptomig nyúlik vissza. A világon az egyik legtöbbet feldolgozott, számos alkalommal megfilmesített és előadott mese. A balettváltozat zenéjét Szergej Prokofjev szerezte. Hamupipőke gúnynevét anyja halála után, mostohanővéreitől és mostohaanyjától kapta, akik a lányt házuk cselédjévé tették, még a kandalló tisztítását is vele végeztették. Amikor a trónörökös bált hirdetett, hogy a legszebb leányok közül párt találjon magának, a gonosz nővérek hiába próbálták megakadályozni Hamupipőkét, aki egy jó tündér segítségével titokban mégis megjelent az estélyen: varázslatos ruhájában és arany cipellőjében ő tündökölt a legszebben. A királyfi valamennyi leány lábára felpróbálta a cipőt, de az végül csak a szépséges Hamupipőke lábára illett. Azonnal elvette feleségül, és még tán ma is élnek, ha meg nem haltak.

However, with the help of a good fairy, they were thwarted when Cinderella arrived at the dance looking the most resplendent of all in her enchanting gown and golden slippers. The prince immediately fell in love with her, but his attempts to discover her identity failed, as the girl fled each evening. Then the prince spread pitch on one of the steps in the staircase, and Cinderella’s golden slipper stuck to it. The prince had every girl in the land try on the shoe, but in the end it only fit the foot of the beautiful Cinderella. He immediately married her, and they lived happily ever after.
